The Seabird Ecological Assessment Network (SEANET)
SEANET is collaborating with seabird researchers along the coast from Delaware Bay north throughout New England and Atlantic Canada to form a cohesive network of researchers and citizen scientists, creating a database of seabird information and an on-going web-based reporting system. The project includes the collection and compilation of baseline data on seabird mortality and population distribution, including regular (monthly or more frequent) volunteer-based beached bird surveys that will provide information about mortality events and help prevent future risks. Several high school science classes have incorporated SEANET beached bird surveys into their curricula, and the project provides an opportunity for teachers to explore a variety of conservation issues, data collection protocols, and field activities. SEANET investigates threats to the marine and coastal birds and their environment such as oil spills, diseases, marine debris ingestion and entanglements, and biotoxins from harmful algal blooms.
