Massachusetts Coastal Zone Management (MCZM) announces the appointment of David Janik, who has served as a Regional Planner with the Buzzards Bay Project for six years, as the MCZM Regional Coordinator for the new South Coastal Region. "I am extremely pleased to be able to hire someone with Dave's demonstrated experience in coastal management in the region," emphasized Peg Brady, Director of MCZM. "Dave brings to this important position his extensive knowledge of Buzzards Bay, along with his experience with working with the local communities of the area. It is a great match!"

MCZM recently reorganized its regional program to complement the Executive Office of Environmental Affairs (EOEA) statewide Basin Approach to Watershed Management, while improving and strengthening MCZM's relationship with EOEA sister departments. Specifically, the boundaries for all MCZM Regions have been redrawn to more closely follow watershed boundaries. Another goal of the reorganization was to cover coastal areas that traditionally have not received the attention they deserved, and provide a greater support system for MCZM's Regional Program.

Mr. Janik will serve as the Regional Coordinator for MCZM's new South Coastal Region, which combines MCZM's previous Southeast and South Shore Regional Offices. This new Regional Office will be co-located with the Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) Southeast Regional Office (SERO) in Lakeville, which will allow for additional coordination between MCZM and DEP. Along with Mr. Janik, another full-time staff person will be hired for the region to ensure that the needs of the communities will be met. The communities covered by the South Coastal Region are: Acushnet, Berkley, Dartmouth, Dighton, Duxbury, Fairhaven, Fall River, Freetown, Hanover, Kingston, Marion, Marshfield, Mattapoisett, New Bedford, Norwell, Pembroke, Plymouth, Rehobeth, Scituate, Seekonk, Somerset, Swansea, Wareham, and Westport.

The new South Coastal Regional Office in Lakeville will be opened on October 2. The address and telephone number for this office is:

Massachusetts Coastal Zone Management
South Coastal Regional Office
20 Riverside Drive
Lakeville, MA 02347
Telephone: (508) 946-8990

Mr. Janik has ten years of experience in coastal management and environmental and land use planning at the county and state level. At the Buzzards Bay Project, which is administered by MCZM, he has served as a Regional Planner and Wastewater Specialist for over six years. In this role he has provided technical assistance to Buzzards Bay communities on alternative septic systems, on-site wastewater disposal, stormwater control, boat sewage management, land use, and other water quality protection and improvement issues. He also oversaw a municipal grant program that included over 35 contracts with Buzzards Bay communities for projects that protected the Bay. He also has experience in the preparation of proposals for federal and state funding of environmental projects.

Before coming to the Buzzards Bay Project, Mr. Janik served as a Water Resources Planner at the Cape Cod Planning and Economic Development Commission. In this position, he provided technical assistance and information to Cape Cod towns and the public on environmental problems and solutions, especially those related to groundwater protection. He also participated in reviewing projects under the Massachusetts Environmental Protection Act, to ensure that those projects met state environmental standards.

When asked about his new position, Mr. Janik replied, "I am pleased with the prospect of continuing to work with the Buzzards Bay communities -- and at the same time excited about the opportunity to assist the communities along the South Shore and Mount Hope Bay on coastal management issues."
