Contact: Anne Donovan
Massachusetts Coastal Zone Management (MCZM) has appointed Andrea Cooper, who currently serves as the Co-Director of the Massachusetts Audubon Society's North Shore Office, as MCZM's new North Shore Regional Coordinator. "I've had the pleasure of seeing first hand Andrea's accomplishments working in the North Shore Region. She knows the North Shore and she knows how to bring people together to make things happen," emphasized Peg Brady, Director of MCZM. "Her understanding of local issues, her common-sense approach, and her driving commitment to creating solutions will make her an excellent MCZM Regional Coordinator." "Working for MCZM will expand my ability to provide outreach, information, and technical assistance on crucial coastal issues to the many North Shore Communities," explained Ms. Cooper. "I look forward to strengthening existing networks and building new 'action-oriented' collaboratives. This is an exciting opportunity and challenge for me." Ms. Cooper has been both the Co-Director of the Massachusetts Audubon Society's North Shore Office and a Land Use Policy Specialist for the past eight years. In this position, she serves as a regional planner and liaison for Audubon to the North Shore cities and towns. Ms. Cooper has extensive experience in working with rural and urban communities, and in forming cooperative efforts between municipalities and state and federal agencies to design and implement solutions to coastal issues. She has also developed innovative land use and environmental planning strategies for local and regional coastal projects, with particular emphasis on nonpoint source pollution reduction, stormwater and septic system management, and waterfront planning. Before starting with Audubon, Ms. Cooper served as an elected member of Rowley's Planning Board, where she reviewed commercial site and subdivision plans and prepared analyses of environmental impacts. Before that, she was a staff reporter for the Newburyport Daily News and provided coverage of all government meeting within Newburyport and prepared news analyses and commentary on municipal issues.
