Grants for Coastal Smart Growth Projects

The following grant programs can support Coastal Smart Growth projects:

  • Coastal Pollutant Remediation Grant Program - This CZM program funds projects that reduce nonpoint sources of pollution, particularly from transportation-related sources such as stormwater runoff from roads.
  • Commonwealth Capital - The state's Office of Commonwealth Development coordinates state capital spending programs to ensure that these funds promote sustainable development. Smart Growth initiatives can help communities increase their Commonwealth Capital scores to improve their competitiveness for these grant programs.
  • Section 319 Nonpoint Source Pollution Competitive Grants Program - Section 319 of the Clean Water Act of 1987 established a national program to control nonpoint sources (NPS) of pollution. Each year the Massachusetts Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) 319 grants program funds implementation, demonstration, and outreach projects, including those incorporating Low Impact Development practices. See the DEP Municipal Services Other Grant Programs Web Page for information on this and other DEP-administered grants.
  • Watershed Protection Grant and Loan Programs - In addition to 319, DEP administers several federal grant programs that cover water quality planning, nonpoint source pollution control, wellhead and drinking water quality protection, and wastewater management.
  • Self Help Land and Water Conservation Grants - The EEA Division of Conservation Services administers the following grant programs: Self-Help (which funds conservation land purchases), Urban Self-Help (which funds acquisition, construction, and renovation of parks), and the federal Land and Water Conservation Fund (which funds conservation or parks projects that feature outdoor recreation).
  • Smart Growth Funding Sources - This U.S. Environmental Protection Agency web page is a guide to funding resources for open space preservation, water quality, transportation, and other Smart Growth topics.
