Site consists of ~42 acres within the Mill Pond intertidal system west of the O'Malley Middle School and south of Route 127. The site is owned by the City of Gloucester and is an active Priority Project sponsored by the city with support from WRP and other restoration partners. At the northern end of the site, Route 127 crosses the tidal creek with a culvert and tide gate that has severely restricted tidal flow to the site for many years. Phase I of the restoration was initiated in April 2004 when the city opened the existing tide gate and left it open to allow the maximum tidal exchange possible with the existing structure. Even with the gate fully open, the structure still significantly restricts tidal flow. This was confirmed by a tidal survey conducted in 2005 that recorded a restriction of over 1.5 feet during spring tide conditions. Restoration actions could remove the existing control structure and/or install a new culvert and tide gate to maximize tidal flushing of the upstream system while preventing flooding of adjacent structures. A feasibility study and design are complete. Project permitting is underway and construction to double the size of the tide gate capacity will occur in late 2008 or early 2009. Restoration potential is considered high based on the large area of degraded marsh and ownership and support from the city for this project. See the Rapid Site Assessment for further information. Sites 163 and 431 are both upstream of this restriction and would be affected by restoration of tidal flow beneath Route 127.
