Rapid Technical Site Assessment

The Newman Road restoration site is an active WRP Priority Project that is sponsored by the town of Newbury in partnership with the Trustees of Reservations which owns the majority of the site. The culvert beneath Newman Road significantly restricts tidal flow to ~33 acres of upstream marsh. A tidal survey in 2005 measured a spring tide restriction of 0.9 feet. Other evidence of a restriction includes scour pools on both sides of the crossing and encroachment of Phragmites and woody vegetation in upper portions of the marsh. Restoration actions would consist of replacing the existing culvert with a larger structure to allow full tidal flushing of the upstream marshes. Restoration potential is considered high based on ownership of the site by TTOR and active development of the project by restoration partners. Design and permitting have recently been completed and construction will likely proceed in 2009, following receipt of funding through a North American Wetlands Conservation Act (NAWCA) grant, that will be combined with other funding sources. See the Rapid Site Assessment for further details.
