Rapid Technical Site Assessment

Site 6

353Site ID:SalisburyTown:7.6Acres:YesRapid Technical Site Assessment:RestrictionFillAgricultureOtherCompleted ProjectMediumPriority:This privately-owned site consists of a salt marsh bounded by a commercial property along Beach Road to the south and Old County Road to the north. Several small culverts provide limited tidal flow to the site beneath Old County Road. The upstream marsh exhibits several indicators of degraded conditions, including extensive stands of Phragmites. Two separate tidal surveys have documented a significant tidal restriction during spring tides. The Essex County Mosquito Control and Wetland Management District has been studying this site for several years to explore ways to reduce mosquito breeding and restore healthy wetland conditions. Mosquito Control staff and the landowner have been discussing options to restore tidal flow to the site by replacing the culverts beneath Old County Road. Approximately 7.5 acres of salt marsh could be restored via replacement of the Old County Road culverts to increase tidal flows. Restoration potential is considered medium due to the private ownership and sustained interest in the site from various entities. Restoration at this site should also take into consideration potential restoration of the abutting upland area to the south via fill removal (see site #6). See the Rapid Site Assessment for further details.Site Summary:Under DevelopmentImpact Type(s)StatusPotential Project
