Welcome
to the homepage for Norfolk District Attorney William R. Keating.
I hope you will learn more about the programs and services my office
provides.
As the chief law enforcement officer for the Norfolk District,
I am responsible for the prosecution of criminal offenses that
occur within the District.
If you
imagine law enforcement, the courts, and social service agencies
as intersecting roads, the District Attorney can be compared
to the traffic director
standing in the middle.
Prosecution
As the chief prosecuting attorney for the Norfolk
District, it is my job to promote public safety through the effective prosecution of criminals
who commit serious and violent crimes. With a staff of approximately
120 people, we work with the court and law enforcement communities
every day to prosecute nearly 20,000 cases a year in the towns
comprising Norfolk District.
These cases involve homicide, sexual assault, domestic violence,
robbery, drug sales and possession, fraud, theft, driving under the influence
of alcohol and other drugs, and many other offenses.
We also
make appropriate and effective use of alternative punishment
and rehabilitation options for first-time offenders of lesser
crimes.
Under
Commonwealth of Massachusetts law, all criminal cases brought
to prosecution must be handled by the Office of the District
Attorney or the Office
of the Massachusetts Attorney General.
Crime
Prevention and Victim Services
Crime prevention and victim services are also
top priorities for my administration. Each victim or witness of a crime is assigned a specially
trained advocate to provide support in the immediate aftermath of the crime and
provide critical assistance throughout the court process. Our Education and
Intervention Services Unit works with schools and social service agencies
throughout the Norfolk District to develop crime prevention and education
programs. We have initiated the Norfolk Anti-Crime Council, increased
resources to serve and support victims of crime, and our Juvenile Unit
has expanded police and school official roundtables to enhance school safety
and foster early intervention. We try to reach children as young as elementary
school, when patterns of behavior can be most easily changed.
