JURY FINDS SOSA GUILTY ON ALL COUNTS

March 12, 2008

A Suffolk Superior Court jury today convicted a notorious sex offender of repeatedly raping a 50-year-old woman in her home more than a dozen years ago, Suffolk County District Attorney Daniel F. Conley announced.

CHE BLAKE SOSA, 38 (D.O.B. 7/22/69), was found guilty of two counts of aggravated rape for gaining access to the woman’s Jamaica Plain home in the early morning hours of Aug. 22, 1995, through a window she had left open on the hot summer night, beating her so badly her jaw was broken, and raping her twice.

A panel of 11 women and five men heard opening statements on March 3, followed by four full days of testimony from eight prosecution witnesses and a single defense witness – the defendant himself. They heard closing arguments Friday morning and 12 deliberating jurors began to weigh the evidence later that day. They continued until about 3:15 this afternoon.

“The jury’s decision was the right one,” Conley said. “The crime at the heart of this case was so brutal as to speak for itself. We will recommend an appropriately harsh sentence.”

Following the return of the jury’s verdicts, Superior Court Judge Christine McEvoy scheduled sentencing for tomorrow morning at 10:00 in courtroom 808. He faces life in prison on each count of aggravated rape and is currently serving a lengthy state prison term out of Norfolk County.

Sosa was represented by attorney Joseph Krowski.
