NO BAIL FOR ALLSTON MURDER SUSPECT

April 1, 2008

An Allston man was held without bail today following his arraignment on charges that he fatally shot an acquaintance on Linden Street early Saturday morning, Suffolk County District Attorney Daniel F. Conley announced.

THOMAS B. MANNING, 22 (D.O.B. 10/17/85), pleaded not guilty to murder at his Brighton District Court arraignment for the homicide of 25-year-old Brighton resident Luis G. Ortiz. Accommodating a request by Assistant District Attorney Masai King, Judge David T. Donnelly ordered Manning held without bail.

King told the court that, shortly after 2:00 on the morning of March 29, Boston Police responded to the area of Farrington Avenue and Linden Street, where they found a Mazda 626 with damage to the rear passenger’s side window and Ortiz being treated by Boston EMS for a single gunshot wound to the chest.

Ortiz was subsequently transported to Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center, where he succumbed to his injury.

Investigators soon learned that Manning and Ortiz were known to one another and had been travelling in Manning’s car with another individual when an altercation arose between the victim and the defendant in which the defendant may have sustained an injury.

King told the court that Manning exited the vehicle and fired a 9mm handgun into the rear passenger’s side window, hitting Ortiz, before fleeing the scene.

Manning later contacted Boston Police homicide detectives and made arrangements to surrender himself last night. In a post-Miranda statement, Manning allegedly made statements indicating that he had been present in the vehicle with the victim and that he had been in fear for his life.

Manning was represented by attorney Willie Davis. He will return to court on May 2.
