CHELSEA MAN GETS PRISON TIME FOR GUN SALE

May 7, 2008

A Chelsea man pleaded guilty this week to selling an illegal firearm last summer, taking a three- to five-year state prison term and prompting the sentencing judge to urge him to turn his life around, Suffolk County District Attorney Daniel F. Conley said.

Upon his release from state prison, 29-year-old GEOVANY LUGO (D.O.B. 4/16/79) will also be placed on supervised probation for a period of two years – meaning he will be monitored by the state until at least 2013. Lugo pleaded guilty to unlawful possession of a firearm, ammunition, and a high capacity weapon.

Lugo was one of five men arrested in the course of an extensive investigation by local, state, and federal authorities assigned to the North Shore Gang Task Force. Chelsea Police, State Troopers, and FBI agents conducted extensive operations in the area, arranging for Lugo to sell a Cobray MAC-11 and 38 rounds of ammunition to a confidential informant for $1,800.

The Aug. 18, 2007, sale was captured on video inside a specially-wired government vehicle. Though the informant did not know Lugo’s identity at the time of the sale, Chelsea Police familiar with gang-associated individuals in the area were able to identify him later. Lugo was arrested on Oct. 16.

“This operation not only took a put an illegal gun dealer behind bars,” Conley said, “it also took a dangerous weapon off the streets and out of criminals’ hands.”

The United States Attorney’s Office indicted four others arrested for similar offenses. Lugo’s case was referred to Conley’s office because of his minimal record.

After his May 5 sentencing, Superior Court Judge Carol Ball urged Lugo to turn his life around and “refrain from the gun selling thing” when he gets out of prison.

Lugo was represented by attorney Joseph Griffin.
