26 Ways to Foster Healthy Youth Development



1.  Make a chore chart and let your child keep track of his/her accomplishments.

2.  Praise your child.

3.  Post a list of reasons why your child is special.

4.  Help your child start a hobby or collection.

5.  Teach your child safety procedures, how to call 911 and other emergency numbers.

6.  Buy your child a watch and teach him/her to tell time.

7.  Play games and do puzzles together.

8.  Plan, prepare and eat a meal together.

9.  Talk to your child about his/her cultural heritage.

10.  Let your child select the clothes he/she will wear today.

11.  Make a growth chart.

12.  Spend a day alone with your child.

13.  Make a family tree.

14.  Write a letter to a relative together.

15.  Volunteer with your child.

16.  Plan to attend school events, field trips, etc.

17.  Set a quiet place for your child to study.

18.  Read to your child and let your child read to you.

19.  Help your child get a library card.

20.  Acknowledge your child's feelings.

21.  Tell your child you love him/her everyday.

22.  Go for a walk to learn the neighborhood and then find your community on a map.

23.  Plant a seed and watch it grow.   Let your child take care of the plant.

24.  Hang your child's artwork around the house.

25.  Be a coach, school volunteer or scout leader.

26.  Teach your child good manners.
