HALF-MILLION BAIL FOR MAN WHO ALLEGEDLY SHOT AT POLICE

April 14, 2009

A Hyde Park man was ordered held on half a million dollars’ cash bail today following his arraignment on charges that he fired on Boston Police who stopped the vehicle in which he was riding last night, Suffolk County District Attorney Daniel F. Conley announced.

“Each of us is deeply relieved that none of the officers was injured,” Conley said. “Last night’s incident was a stark reminder of the dangers they face every day and every night.”

West Roxbury District Court Judge Annette Forde set the bail recommended by Assistant District Attorney Mark Hallal, who told the court that JOHN MENTOR (D.O.B. 4/13/86) shouted “I should have killed all three of you motherfuckers” upon being taken from the car’s back seat.

Hallal told the court that two members of the Boston Police Drug Control Unit were conducting surveillance in the area of River Street, which has been plagued by drug-related crime in recent weeks. In the course of their activity, the DCU officers observed a green Honda Accord with a revoked registration on River Street at about 8:15 p.m. Inside were four occupants, including the defendant in the right rear passenger seat.

The DCU officers requested a marked cruiser to effect a motor vehicle stop on the Accord. A cruiser occupied by two uniformed Boston Police officers responded and stopped the vehicle near the intersection of River Street and Gordon Avenue.

The uniformed officers and DCU officers approached the car to ask the driver, CARLINE TOUSSAINT (D.O.B. 7/30/84) of Brockton, for her license and registration. As they did so, Hallal said, Mentor produced a gray revolver and fired it through a partly-open right rear window at the officers. Another officer returned fire. No one was hit.

The officers dove bodily into the car and prevented Mentor from firing again. They extricated him from the vehicle and placed him on the ground, where he allegedly told officers that he should have killed them.

Officers also removed the other three occupants, who left eight plastic bags of marijuana in their wake when walked into the District 13 station. Toussaint provided officers with a ninth bag of marijuana that was on her person. She was cited for operating after her registration was revoked and for possession of marijuana.

At the time of his arrest, Hallal said, Mentor was on probation for a 2006 stabbing to which he pleaded guilty in 2007. Prosecutors recommended a three-year state prison sentence followed by probation; he was sentenced to two and a half years in a house of correction followed by probation.

Mentor is represented by attorney Thomas Karp. He will return to court on May 11.
