WOMAN WIELDING HAMMER, DOG LEASH CHARGED WITH ASSAULT

September 6, 2007

Boston Police collared a Revere woman after she allegedly attacked her boyfriend with a dog leash and swung a hammer at him during a weekend incident outside the man’s Stadium Way residence, Suffolk County District Attorney Daniel F. Conley announced.

JACQUELINE S. SHANNON, 31 (D.O.B. 12/19/75), was arraigned Tuesday in the Brighton Division of the Boston Municipal Court Department. Prosecutors charged her with two counts of assault and battery with a dangerous weapon as well as single counts of assault and battery and disturbing the peace.

Officers responding to a domestic dispute at the man’s home Monday evening arrived to find Shannon and the 39-year-old victim standing in front of the residence. Shannon was pacing back and forth, swearing loudly, and screaming at the man, whose T-shirt was so torn and shredded that it hung loosely over his shoulders and only the collar remained around his neck.

Prosecutors told the district court judge at arraignment that Shannon said she would “kill someone” if she didn’t get her property back. For his part, the victim denied having anything that belonged to her.

The officers’ attempts to calm the woman were unsuccessful. Shannon walked to her nearby Jeep Wrangler, retrieved an orange-handled hammer, and allegedly began swinging it at the man until one of the officers disarmed her. Undeterred, she then allegedly picked up a dog leash that was lying on the ground and attempted to wrap it around the man’s neck.

It took both officers to restrain the woman, Conley said, and even then she allegedly attempted to drive her knee into the man’s groin area before being handcuffed and taken into custody. Once at the District 14 station, she refused to cooperate with the booking process.

Prosecutors discussed the case with the victim Tuesday morning. He was present in court and indicated that he did not wish to see her held on bail, so prosecutors recommended that Shannon be released on her own recognizance. Prosecutors did, however, recommend that the judge issue a no abuse order – a request that was granted by the court.

Shannon will return to court on Oct. 9 for a pre-trial hearing.
