Weather Delays Opening of Some OHV
Trails
Due to wet trail conditions, the Department of Conservation
and Recreation (DCR) will delay the opening of motorized trails in the Berkshires
for about a week. Heavy April snow in
the western part of the state has melted only recently, so trails are still wet
and vulnerable to damage. Therefore,
trails in Beartown State Forest, October Mountain State Forest, Pittsfield
State Forest, and Tolland State Forest are scheduled
to open on Wednesday, May 9.
In southeastern Massachusetts, off-highway motorcycle trails in three forests
are opening on schedule, on Tuesday, May 1. There is no delay for trail openings at F.
Gilbert Hills State Forest, Franklin State Forest, or Wrentham State
Forest.
Freetown State Forest, however, has historically delayed its opening to accommodate
a Native American event. Trails at Freetown will open to motorcycle use on
Monday, May 7.
DCR thanks the state’s trail riders for helping protect and sustain these
trails by refraining from riding in some areas until conditions improve.
