In the extreme southwest corner of Massachusetts
is a cluster of parks noted for their spectacular
scenery and stunning views. They surround "The Dome" of Mount Everett in this 1,356 acre state reservation. Seasonal road access and parking is available to the Guilder Pond day-use area. From thereon a 0.75 mile path leads to the top of Mount Everett. At the 2,624-foot elev. summit, amidst an unusual dwarf pitch pine-scrub oak forest, is a breathtaking 360-degree panorama of Massachusetts, New York and Connecticut.
Informal picnicking is available at Guilder Pond which features a spectacular display of blooming mountain laurel and azalea in the spring. Hike the Appalachian Trail as it winds its way along the ridgeline and through Sage's Ravine, or from the MA Rte. 41 trailhead, try the Race Brook Trail as it climbs beside a tumbling and falling brook.
The road at Mt. Everett is now closed for the winter.
The park is open sunrise to sunset year-round. Access is free. Parking is permitted in designated areas only. Overnight parking is restricted; please call ahead for more information.
Be prepared: No services are available. Carry-in, carry-out all your belongings and trash.
Be bear aware: Don't forget you are in Black Bear country. Never physically confront, feed, torment or throw anything at bears. Take appropriate precautions with food so as not to attract bears.
Rattlesnakes reside at this Park: They are protected by law. Never approach, handle, provoke or move snakes.
Tick warning: Take precautions to avoid ticks. Check for ticks at regular intervals.
Pets are permitted. Must be on a 10-foot maximum leash and attended at all times. Must have proof of current Rabies vaccine. Please be courteous and clean up after your pet.
Prohibited: Motorized off-road vehicles and alcoholic beverages.
Park Directions Mount Everett State Reservation is located in the southern Berkshires in western Massachusetts.
From East or West/Mass Pike (I-90): Take Exit 2 in Lee. Follow MA Rte. 102 west for 4.7 miles to Stockbridge. Turn left and follow US Rte. 7 south for 7.7 miles through Great Barrington. Turn right and follow MA Rte. 23 west for 4.9 miles to South Egremont. Turn left onto MA Rte. 41 south, then take immediate right, Mount Washington Road; continue for 7.4 miles (becomes East St.) to Mount Everett Road on left and access to parking.
From the North or South/Rte 7: On US Rte. 7 in Great Barrington, turn onto MA Rte. 23 west for 4.9 miles to South Egremont. Turn left onto MA Rte. 41 south, then take immediate right, Mount Washington Road; continue for 7.4 miles (becomes East St.) to Mount Everett Road on left and access to parking.
Race Brook Trail Head: access is on MA Rte. 41, 5.5 miles south of South Egremont, MA; or 7.3 miles north of Salisbury, CT.
