Outreach and Education

The Service Forest Program promotes achieving long-term landowner goals through the application of sound forestry techniques. We believe that our forests provide a wide range of benefits and enhancements to our region and our lives. We try to give landowners the information they need to make educated decisions about their own woodlands. This information is tailored to the individual needs of the landowner and the land that they steward. Some landowners simply want a report of recent timber prices, others are interested favorable tax treatment for forest lands, or have questions about the laws that regulate timber harvesting in Massachusetts. Still other landowners might be interested in achieving non-timber goals, estate planning, or contacting a state forester to speak at a local school, event, or workshop.

Although the Service Forestry Program serves all landowners we work to promote the use of professional consultant foresters to help landowners prepare long-term plans for the management of their property. Consultant Foresters are Massachusetts Licensed Forester who work directly for a landowner to help them achieve their goals for their forest land. Like any private services we encourage landowners to contact several consultant foresters to get an idea of the range of services and find a good fit with their own needs and goals. You can use the list of Massachusetts Licensed Foresters to start this process.

Whatever your individual goals and needs the 14 State Service Foresters can help you or your community make educated decisions about protecting and enjoying our wonderful forest resources.
