Branching Out: Additional Programs

Tree Steward Training: Strengthening Branches in Your Community Forest

Each fall, the Massachusetts Urban and Community Forestry Program and the Massachusetts Community Forestry Council hosts a training is for Tree Board members, tree activists, interested citizens, Tree Wardens and other green professionals. This Tree Steward Training provides foundation instruction in tree physiology, tree care, and other urban and community forestry issues with the aim of developing better tree stewardship in Massachusetts communities of all sizes.

Speakers include urban and community forestry professional from the USDA Forest Service, green industries, and the Massachusetts Urban Forestry Program. You can download the Tree Steward Training Registration Materials, Program and Sponsorship Letter.

Poster Contest: Budding Artists have a Chance to Bloom

Each year, over 1500 Massachusetts fifth graders participate in the National Arbor Day Poster Contest. The winners reap rewards including art supplies, ice cream, and a tree for their school. Each year there is a theme like “Trees are Terrific…from acorn to oak!” (2003) or "Trees are Terrific....In Cities and Towns!" (2009).

Technical Assistance: Building Local Program Capacity
The DCR Urban and Community Forestry Program also provides direct technical assistance to communities. Our Community Action Foresters can help your community:

  • Train staff and volunteers for a community tree survey or inventory
  • Build a Community Tree Committee
  • Train staff or volunteers in tree care and management issues
  • Draft an Urban Forestry Management Plan

Massachusetts DCR – National Arbor Day Foundation Tree City USA (TCUSA) Awards

In partnership with the National Arbor Day Foundation, the Department of Conservation and Recreation administers the annual Tree City USA program. DCR is responsible for reviewing Tree City USA applications from Massachusetts to ensure that the information is current, accurate, and complete. We then recommend applicants for the award to the National Arbor Day Foundation. The deadline for submitting applications is December 31, 2007. Posted below, please find DCR instructions for submitting the application and the required budget sheet. All applications (standard TCUSA, Recertification, and Growth) can be found at the National Arbor Day web site at http://www.arborday.org/programs/treecityapplication.html.
