Budding Artists have a Chance to Bloom

Each year, over 1500 Massachusetts fifth graders participate in the National Arbor Day

Poster Contest. The winners reap rewards including art supplies, ice cream, and a tree for their school. Each year there is a theme like “Trees are Terrific…from acorn to oak!” (2003) or "Trees are Terrific....In Cities and Towns!" (2009).

The theme for 2012, “Treemendous Massachusetts…..the Forest We Live In,” will inspire your students to think of themselves as part of the forest community and not just as observers. However they wish to interpret the theme we hope it provides a fun and valuable learning opportunity.

Massachusetts DCR - National Arbor Day Foundation Tree City USA (TCUSA) Awards

In partnership with the National Arbor Day Foundation, the Department of Conservation and Recreation administers the annual Tree City USA program. DCR is responsible for reviewing Tree City USA applications from Massachusetts to ensure that the information is current, accurate, and complete. We then recommend applicants for the award to the National Arbor Day Foundation. The deadline for submitting applications is December 31, 2011. The National Arbor Day Foundation now makes the entire application process available on-line at http://www.arborday.org/programs/treecityusa/?breadcrumb=homepage DCR prefers that Cities and Towns use this on-line tool for the application process.  However, if you need to fill out a paper application, please find below DCR instructions for submitting the application and the required budget sheet. All applications (standard TCUSA, Recertification, and Growth) can be found at the National Arbor Day web site at http://www.arborday.org/programs/treecityapplication.html.

Please contact Eric Seaborn 617-626-1468 or eric.seaborn@state.ma.us if you need additional information.
