CCC Events and Programs

 

2008 marks the 75th anniversary of the creation of the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC). The CCC served as a catalyst to develop the very tenants of modern conservation, dramatically enhancing America’s natural resource treasures, and resulted in the core infrastructure of the Massachusetts State Park system.

Throughout the year DCR is celebrating the CCC legacy with special events and interpretive programs.  Here are some select program offerings for the 2008 anniversary:

Saturday, May 17 - Southeastern MA:  Myles Standish State Forest CCC & Park Serve Day Event, Fearing Pond, Plymouth.  The Friends of Myles Standish host a morning volunteer activity as part of DCR’s statewide Park Serve Day.  At 12 noon, the Friends sponsor a community barbeque at Fearing Pond,(the last remaining CCC-built log bathhouse in the Mass.) Saturday, May 31 - Central MA:  CCC Day Event, Wendell State Forest Saturday, 10am-3pm.  Explore the life and times in the CCC!  Event includes a living history army tent and camp, exhibits and hands-on activities, CCC tools, fire control demonstrations, Smokey Bear, CCC alumni recognition program.  CCC alumni are welcome to share stories about life in the Corps. June 19-22 - Central MA: New England Association of Fire Chiefs-Fire Expo, Eastern States Exposition, West Springfield - Fire related fair and exhibition. Indoor-outdoor displays, DCR Fire Control, CCC-period fire control equipment displays, CCC camp and fire tower display, Smokey Bear. Admission required. September 12-22 - Central MA:  Eastern States Exposition, West Springfield – Massachusetts state building CCC anniversary exhibits and displays, living history camp and truck. Admission required. Visit www.thebige.com

 

Saturday, October 11 - Northeast MA: CCC Day Celebration, Upton State Forest, Upton -  Sponsored by the Friends of Upton State Forest, featuring historical CCC indoor-outdoor displays and family activities, hikes, letterboxing, flagpole dedication, ribbon-cutting for “CCC Way” and a ceremony to honor CCC alumni and family. Refreshments available. Event coincides with “Footsteps in History” weekend for Blackstone River Valley.
