Educational Programs and Statistics

Geographic Information Systems
The Geographic Information Systems (GIS) Program provides maps, geographical data, geographic analyses and GPS services to DCR. GIS plays an important role in many of DCR's programs and the demand for GIS services has been increasing.

Education, Interpretation and Visitor Services
The goal of Education, Interpretation and Visitor Services is to increase the public's awareness and appreciation of the Commonwealth's natural, cultural and historical resources; to present the DCR as a steward of those resources; and to foster a stewardship ethic among visitors to our forests and parks.

Lakes and Ponds
The Lakes and Ponds Program works to protect, manage and restore over 3,000 lakes and ponds in Massachusetts. We provide grant funding and technical assistance to communities and citizen groups, help to monitor water quality at various public beaches to ensure public safety, and provide educational materials to the public about various lake issues.

Rainfall Program
The Office of Water Resources maintains a network of approximately 150 precipitation observation stations operated by volunteers throughout Massachusetts. Volunteers measure precipitation daily and file reports monthly. We also maintain a precipitation database including data reported by our observers, the National Weather Service, and the Army Corps of Engineers.
