A public meeting to solicit input and comments for the Central Berkshire District Resource Management Plan was held at 6:30 p.m. on September 29, 2005 at the Berkshires Regional Headquarters (South Mountain), 740 South Street, Pittsfield MA. Public comments on this forest management plan will be accepted through December 2, 2005.  Comments will be used to finalize the plan.

Massachusetts needs modern, systematic resource management planning.  State law requires management planning on all forestland owned by state agencies and departments.  In addition, the DCR system lands are Green Certified as sustainable managed forests.  Maintaining our certification requires the development of resource management plans that will explore and catalog our resources and direct their wise and sustainable use over time.

We have many good reasons to wisely manage our state forests, and the public can contribute to the planning process in a number of important ways.  Participants will have a chance to learn more about forest management, and how and why we harvest trees, and share information or voice ideas about favorite state forests or parks.   This is the public’s opportunity to participate in the development of a Forest Plans that meets the legislative mandate of the agency.
