The interpretive staff at Walden Pond Reservation offers
a wide array of programs for visitors year-round. Children's
seasonal programs include nature crafts, story time, and the
Junior Ranger series. Adult and family activities include
poetry reading, tracking programs and Thoreau walks. Accessible
hiking and boating programs are scheduled in the spring and
summer. School and group tours are available when scheduled
in advance. Tour themes focus on the natural history of Walden
Pond and Thoreau's life and his impact on society.
Parks As Classrooms is an initiative
that uses a facility’s unique
character to provoke critical
thinking skills about our environment. This module, "Henry
David Thoreau: The
Making of a Naturalist" provides education about
design and use of landscapes through
hands-on activities and direct experience
with natural and cultural resources. (2.6Mb pdf download)
There are three types of tours offered by the interpretive
staff at Walden Pond.
Self-guided tour. Allows the group to come
and explore on their own. Trail maps are provided (or may
be downloaded here)
and a Quest brochure guides you around the pond in a different
way.
Semi-guided tour: Allows the group to meet
with a member of the interpretive staff at the replica of
Thoreau's cabin for a brief introduction to his life, cabin,
experiment in simplicity and writings. The program lasts 20
to 30 minutes. The group can then spend the rest of their
visit exploring on their own.
Full guided tour: Allows the group to meet
with a member of the interpretive staff at the replica of
Thoreau's cabin for the first part of the program and continue
with the group to the house site.
