Located within Hawley, Plainfield and Savoy, the 7,882 acre northern hardwood and spruce-fir forest offers 35 miles of mixed-use trails, six miles of hiking trails and one mile interpretive trail around Hallockville Pond. Discover an abundance of historic sites including cellar holes from the abandoned village of South Hawley; Moody Springs; a rare fieldstone "beehive" charcoal kiln; and remains of mill complex at Hallockville Pond.
The Massachusetts Student Conservation Association-AmeriCorps (SCA) program is headquartered at Hallockville Pond. For more information on the SCA program call: (413) 339-6631.
Things to know before you go...
The forest is open sunrise to sunset year-round. Access is free. Interior roads are in poor condition.
Be prepared: No services are available. Carry-in, carry-out all your belongings and trash.
Be bear aware: Don't forget you are in Black Bear country. Never physically confront, feed, torment or throw anything at bears. Take appropriate precautions with food so as not to attract bears.
Snowmobiling: is available on 35 miles of trails, conditions permitting (4-inch minimum hard-packed snow base). Parking is available at King Corner garage on Rte. 8A, 1 mile north of SCA camp; and in East Hawley on Plainfield Road next to fire station.
Prohibited: All Terrain Vehicles and alcoholic beverages.

Dubuque State Forest is located in the northern Berkshires in western Massachusetts.
From East or West/Rte. 2: From MA Rte. 2 in Charlemont, follow Rte. 8A south for 8 miles to SCA/Hallockville Pond entrance on right and parking.
From East or West/Rte. 116: From MA Rte. 116 in Plainfield, take MA Rte. 8A north for 1 mile to the to SCA/Hallockville Pond entrance on left and parking. |
