Well Drillers Program

Geothermal Wells

The Massachusetts Department of Conservation and Recreation (DCR), Well Driller Registration Program is responsible for licensing well drillers in the Commonwealth to protect the groundwater resources from impairment by ensuring that productive and non-productive wells are drilled, constructed, altered, or decommissioned properly.

Consistent with its statutory and regulatory authority DCR requires ground source heat pump well installers, including those installing direct exchange (DX) wells, to be Massachusetts registered well drillers in accordance with 313 CMR §§ 3.00 et seq.

Massachusetts Department of Environmental Protection (MassDEP) has prepared a guidance document for the design, installation, operation, and closure of ground source heat pumps (geothermal heat pumps) which is posted on MassDEP Underground Injection Control (UIC) program’s web page at http://www.mass.gov/dep/water/laws/uic.htm
