The Station continues today as the principal environmental laboratory of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts. Its primary responsibilities are:
To analyze samples, representing all environmental matrices, for all important and regulated environmental contaminants.
To maintain a certification program for commercial and municipal environmental laboratories.
To provide laboratory-related technical and analytical expertise to regional and program staff of DEP.
To conduct and publish basic and applied research dealing with the development and improvement of analytical methods to identify/quantitate contaminants (chemical and microbial) in environmental matrices, with the elucidation of the fate and impacts of contaminants in the ecosytems of Massachusetts, and with environmental performance testing of new innovative technologies proposed for use in Massachusetts.
To participate in the development of a state-wide multi-media strategic monitoring program for DEP intended to assess environmental quality indicators and determine long-term environmental quality trends in the state.
To assess the quality of the environmental monitoring data collected by DEP.
