Commercial, Industrial & Institutional Boilers

Air Plan Applications

Owners/operators of boilers rated at 3 million British Thermal Units (Btu) per hour or more may be required, depending on fuel type (distillate fuel oil, natural gas/propane, residual fuel oil, solid fuel, landfill gas, digester gas or used oil) to submit pre-construction plan applications to the Department of Environmental Protection (MassDEP).

Environmental Results Program (ERP)

Instead of submitting plan applications, owners/operators of certain natural gas- and distillate oil-fired boilers rated at between 10 million and 40 million Btu per hour and installed after September 14, 2001, are required to certify to MassDEP that they are complying with applicable environmental requirements before installation and startup.

Temporary Boilers

Certain temporary boilers may be installed and operated under 310 CMR 7.03(23) without site-specific permits, provided the owner/ operators meet specific emissions and operating limits, and record
keeping requirements.
