How Can I Help Reduce Air Pollution?
Everyone can help reduce air pollution
wall thermostat Conserve Energy
Consider setting your thermostat a little higher in the summer and lower in winter. Install a programmable thermostat that automatically adjusts the temperature when you are in bed or away.

Set the thermostat to 68° F in winter when you're home and down to 55° F when you go to bed or are away (programmable thermostats can do this automatically).
energy star logo  Buy energy-efficient ENERGY STAR ® products.

Products in more than 50 categories are eligible for the ENERGY STAR ® . They use less energy, save money, and help protect the environment. Many utility companies offer rebates and incentives to purchase ENERGY STAR ® qualified products.

public transportation Drive Less
Car pool, use public transportation, bike, or walk when possible. Combine errands to reduce "cold starts" of your car and avoid extended idling.

Walk, ride a bicycle, or use mass transit instead of driving; automobile emissions account for about 60 percent of air pollution in our cities.

Keep Engines Tuned & Vehicles Maintained
Make sure that car, boat, and other engines are properly tuned. If your engine smokes, get it fixed.

Keep Car Tires Properly Inflated
Properly inflated tires help to improve gas mileage.

Refuel After Dusk
Getting gas for your cars and trucks after dusk helps to reduce gas vapors.

Reduce Number of Trips
On days when particle pollution is expected to be high try to cut down on the number of trips you take in your car.

Don't Spill
Take care not to spill gasoline when you fill the tank of your car or lawn or recreation equipment.

Seal Tight
Tightly seal the lids of chemical products and solvents, like  garden chemicals or household cleaners,  to keep evaporation to a minimum. Use environmentally safe paints and cleaning products.

Put out the Fire
Reduce or eliminate fireplace and wood stove use. Avoid burning leaves, trash and other materials

Go Electric on the Lawn
Avoid using gas-powered lawn and garden equipment.
