MCP Numerical Standards: S-3 MCP Numerical Standards have been derived for three categories of soil that were designed to address a broad range of potential human exposures (Categories S-1, S-2 and S-3). The applicability of a particular soil category depends upon both the accessibility of the soil (measured primarily by depth) and the human activities that take place (or may take place) at the surface. Within a soil category there are further sub-categories identified by groundwater type: the soil standards within these subcategories have been modified by the potential for a contaminant to leach and degrade the site groundwater.
The S-3 soil standards consider incidental ingestion of the soil and dermal contact with the soil.
