NPL-Superfund Sites in Massachusetts The mission of the Superfund program is to clean up abandoned, accidentally spilled, or illegally dumped hazardous waste that poses a current or future threat to human health or the environment. The Massachusetts Department of Enviromental Protection's Federal Site Program provides technical guidance and regulatory oversight at National Priority List (NPL) Superfund, Department of Defense, and Brownfield sites in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts.
MA DEP staff works with USEPA, communities, Potentially Responsible Parties (PRPs), scientists, researchers, contractors, and Federal authorities to cleanup these sites. MA DEP staff responsibilities include managing, overseeing, and coordinating site cleanup activities.
Listed below are the current NPL-Superfund sites found in Massachetts. Each listing provides a link to a site specific web page developed by the USEPA. USEPA web site information includes a site description, contaminants, cleanup approach, response actions, progress, status, and photos. When Massachusetts DEP has developed web pages for a site, these have been linked as well, as have additional selected pages from other agencies. The name of the Massachusetts DEP staff lead (with an e-mail link) has been provided for each site.
