Students from five schools in Gloucester and three in Rockport have decorated more than 2,000 paper grocery bags with environmental messages in the 16th Annual Earth Day Groceries Project, supported by Stop & Shop and Shaw's Market (Eastern Avenue) in Gloucester and IGA in Rockport. Bags decorated by students from Beeman, East Gloucester, Plum Cove, Veterans and West Parish Schools in Gloucester and Rockport Elementary, Middle and High Schools have been returned to the three supermarkets, where they will be used to bag customer purchases in observance of Earth Day. Check in at the DPW, 384 Osgood Street, for this volunteer town cleanup. For each of the last six years, an average of 150 volunteers have filled two 30-yard containers with litter. All trash from each classroom on April 30 will be collected at the end of the day. Each grade will sort and weigh its trash. When this was last done in November 2008 (to celebrate America Recycles Day), results showed that 40 percent of the trash by weight was recyclable. The following week, there will be a brief presentation in each classroom. On May 4, Jack Golden will perform for grades 3 through 5. His "Garbage is My Bag" show raises awareness for the environment in a fun and direct way.
