Keystone Freight Fined $3,200 for Failing to Meet Cleanup Requirements
Following Truck Rollover in Sturbridge

Keystone Freight Corp., a transportation company based out of New Jersey, has been assessed a $3,200 penalty by the Massachusetts Department of Environmental Protection (MassDEP) for violations that occurred following a release of diesel fuel on Rte. 84 in Sturbridge.

On October 4, 2006 at 6 a.m., a truck owned and operated by Keystone rolled over into the median strip along Rte. 84 Eastbound across from a rest stop in Sturbridge. As a result, approximately 30 gallons of diesel fuel was released from the truck's fuel tank, impacting soil in the median strip. CYN Oil Corp., on behalf of Keystone, notified MassDEP approximately five hours later. Keystone failed to notify MassDEP of the release within two hours as required.

"The two-hour reporting requirement is critical to ensure that releases will be promptly addressed, minimizing impacts to the environment," said Martin Suuberg, director of MassDEP's Central Regional Office in Worcester. The cleanup of the release is now complete.

MassDEP is responsible for ensuring clean air and water, safe management and recycling of solid and hazardous wastes, timely cleanup of hazardous waste sites and spills, and the preservation of wetlands and coastal resources.
