Bodycote Thermal Processing of Worcester to Pay $1,725 Penalty
For Violating Air Pollution Control Regulations

The Department of Environmental Protection (MassDEP) assessed a $1,725 penalty to Bodycote Thermal Processing, Inc. of Worcester for discharging excessive emission from its facility at 284 Grove St.

During the spring of 2008, MassDEP staff observed excessive visible emissions being discharged from the Bodycote facility. An investigation that followed revealed that a tempering oven was the source of the emissions. Despite having received a Notice of Noncompliance for the emissions in March 2008, the company again created a condition of air pollution in May 2008 by continuing to discharge emissions from its equipment.

Bodycote, which conducts metal treating and processing for the auto and aerospace industries, has agreed to the $1,725 penalty. The company has also agreed to submit plans and specifications to MassDEP for additional air pollution control equipment, and to promptly install and operate the equipment to control the visible emissions from the ovens.

"The installation of add-on pollution control equipment will improve the air quality," said Martin Suuberg, director of MassDEP's Central Regional Office in Worcester.

MassDEP is responsible for ensuring clean air and water, safe management and recycling of solid and hazardous wastes, timely cleanup of hazardous waste sites and spills, and the preservation of wetlands and coastal resources.
