Leominster Corporation Pays $1,100 Penalty for Violating Hazardous Waste Management Requirements

The Mohawk Drive Corporation, of Leominster, will pay a $1,100 penalty to the Commonwealth for Hazardous Waste Management violations that occurred at its 25 Mohawk Drive facility, where it leases space to a number of tenants.

Accompanied by a member of the Leominster Board of Health during a July 2007 inspection, Massachusetts Department of Environmental Protection (MassDEP) personnel observed six 55-gallon drums of waste oil located outside of the Mohawk Drive facility. The waste oil was generated by the now defunct Crowley Associates, Inc., and had been stored at the site for approximately six years, far longer than regulations allow.

"The hazardous waste regulations have provisions that require the timely and proper disposal of waste oil," said Martin Suuberg, director of MassDEP's Central Regional Office in Worcester.  "Once notified of the violation, Mohawk Drive Corporation took immediate steps to properly dispose of the waste."

MassDEP is responsible for ensuring clean air and water, safe management and recycling of solid and hazardous wastes, timely cleanup of hazardous waste sites and spills, and the preservation of wetlands and coastal resources.
