Supercon, Inc. of Shrewsbury Assessed $6,500 Penalty for Violating Air Emission, Hazardous Waste Regulations
The Department of Environmental Protection (MassDEP) assessed a $6,500 penalty to Supercon, Inc., a manufacturer of composite metal wires and rods at its plant located at 830 Boston Turnpike in Shrewsbury, for violating Air Pollution Control and Hazardous Waste Management regulations.
MassDEP personnel conducted an inspection at the facility in January of 2007, and determined that the company had failed to comply with its current permit, resulting in excess air emissions. In addition, the company failed to properly complete its hazardous waste manifests, failed to ensure emergency information was properly maintained and posted, and failed to plan for and train its personnel involved in hazardous waste management.
In a consent order finalized with MassDEP, the company agreed to comply with all applicable regulations, perform a study to determine the appropriate replacement for its air pollution control equipment, and pay the penalty.
"The company needs to replace its air pollution control equipment, and it has agreed to do the research necessary to replace it with the best technology available at this time," said Lee Dillard Adams, deputy regional director of MassDEP's Central Regional Office in Worcester.
MassDEP is responsible for ensuring clean air and water, safe management and recycling of solid and hazardous wastes, timely cleanup of hazardous waste sites and spills, and the preservation of wetlands and coastal resources.
