Bridgewater Company Assessed $31,000 Penalty for Solid Waste Management Violations in Fitchburg and Lunenburg

Global Property Developers Corporation of Bridgewater has been assessed penalties totaling $31,000 by the Massachusetts Department of Environmental Protection (MassDEP) for solid waste violations that occurred at 15 Lakefront Street and off Bemis Road in Lunenburg and Fitchburg, respectively.

In late 2006, MassDEP personnel observed violations of the Solid Waste Regulations at the Whalom Park property in Lunenburg and at the Falls property in Fitchburg, including the improper management and illegal disposal of demolition debris and rubble materials.

In a recently finalized consent order, the company agreed to pay a $7,750 penalty to the Commonwealth and fund a Supplemental Environmental Project (SEP) at nearby Lake Whalom, valued at $26,160.

Under the terms of the SEP, the company will donate manpower, equipment and materials toward several projects at the Lake Whalom public beach, including replacing rusted posts and damaged fencing along the beach as well as improvements to the sand.

"The owners have indicated to MassDEP that they will take prompt action to come into compliance and perform an environmentally beneficial project," said Martin Suuberg, director of MassDEP's Central Regional Office in Worcester.

MassDEP is responsible for ensuring clean air and water, safe management and recycling of solid and hazardous wastes, timely cleanup of hazardous waste sites and spills, and the preservation of wetlands and coastal resources.
