Kutsher's Sports Academy in Monterey Penalized $4,000
for Drinking Water Violations

The Massachusetts Department of Environmental Protection (MassDEP) has issued a $4,000 penalty to KSAMASS LLC, owners of Kutsher's Sports Academy in Monterey, for operating a public water system in 2008 without obtaining necessary MassDEP approvals.

During a routine inspection on Sept. 4, 2008, MassDEP determined that Kutsher's Sports Academy had operated as a public water system without conducting the required water quality monitoring, and the necessary oversight of the water system. Kutsher's also used an onsite well in excess of its approved capacity.

As part of a settlement agreement with MassDEP, Kutsher's has agreed to comply with all public water system requirements, beginning in 2009, and to install a new water supply well that meets MassDEP's requirements.

"Maintaining compliance with the Massachusetts public water system requirements for facilities such as Kutsher's, which provides water to school age campers, is essential in assuring they are operating in accordance with standards necessary for protecting public health," said Michael Gorski, Director of MassDEP's Western Regional Office in Springfield.

MassDEP is responsible for ensuring clean air and water, safe management and recycling of solid and hazardous wastes, timely cleanup of hazardous waste sites and spills, and the preservation of wetlands and coastal resources.
