Springfield Demolition Contractor Fined $4,600 for Air Pollution Violations in Whately
The Massachusetts Department of Environmental Protection (MassDEP) has issued a $4,600 penalty to Associated Building Wreckers, Inc. (ABW) of Springfield. The penalty was the result of the company's failure to implement dust mitigation measures, and for the emission of excessive dust during building demolition operations in Whately.
On August 28, 2007, MassDEP personnel performed a compliance inspection of a building demolition operation located at 45 State Road in Whately. Personnel observed that dust was being generated during the demolition operation and that ABW, Inc. was not implementing proper dust control procedures.
"We have penalized this company twice previously for similar violations," said Michael Gorski, director of MassDEP's Western Regional Office in Springfield. "Dust suppression during demolition operations mainly involves the spraying of water - a relatively simple measure to control excessive dust."
MassDEP had previously assessed penalties against ABW, Inc. for excessive dust emissions during demolition operations in 2003 and 2006.
MassDEP is responsible for ensuring clean air and water, safe management and recycling of solid and hazardous wastes, timely cleanup of hazardous waste sites and spills, and the preservation of wetlands and coastal resources.
