MassDEP Fines CGIT Systems of Medway $7,000
For Violating Hazardous Waste Management Requirements

The Massachusetts Department of Environmental Protection (MassDEP) fined CGIT Systems Inc. of Medway $7,000 for violating hazardous waste management regulations at its 51 Alder Street plant.

MassDEP uncovered the violations during a June 2008 inspection of the company's facility. The violations included generating and storing more hazardous waste than allowed by its registered hazardous waste generator status. CGIT, which fabricates, assembles and tests gas-insulated lines that provide high power transmission capabilities, also failed to properly mark and label hazardous waste containers, maintain containers in good condition, and failed to meet the requirements governing emergency procedures.

In a finalized consent order with MassDEP, CGIT Systems agreed to correct all hazardous waste management violations and pay the $7,000 penalty.

"Companies need to comply with the Hazardous Waste Management requirements to lessen the possibility of employees being exposed, and the environment being damaged by improperly managed hazardous wastes," said Martin Suuberg, director of MassDEP's Central Regional Office in Worcester.

MassDEP is responsible for ensuring clean air and water, safe management and recycling of solid and hazardous wastes, timely cleanup of hazardous waste sites and spills, and the preservation of wetlands and coastal resources.
