Pin Hill, LLC to Pay $8,000 Penalty for Violating Waste Site Cleanup Requirements at Harvard Property
Connecticut-based company Pin Hill LLC must conduct additional cleanup actions and pay $8,000 of a $33,182 penalty assessed by the Massachusetts Department of Environmental Protection (MassDEP) to resolve contamination issues at its property located at 25 Depot Road in Harvard.
Pin Hill, in a consent order with the MassDEP, must take additional response actions to correct violations of the requirements for the assessment and cleanup of chlorinated solvent contamination at its residential property. In August 2005, MassDEP audited the assessment and cleanup of chlorinated solvent contamination in the bedrock aquifer below the property. Although appropriate actions were taken at the time to address nearby affected wells, the audit resulted in an issuance of a Notice of Noncompliance for failing to meet minimum performance standards to assess the source and extent of contamination.
Pin Hill has since corrected the violations to eliminate any exposure to residents, including the installation of a ventilation system to address vapor issues and regular vapor monitoring.
"MassDEP's priority is to ensure exposure to contamination is prevented, especially for residents on affected properties," said Martin Suuberg, director of MassDEP's Central Regional Office in Worcester. "As conditions of the consent order, Pin Hill, LLC will continue to ensure exposures are prevented and the assessment of site conditions will be properly completed."
MassDEP is responsible for ensuring clean air and water, safe management and recycling of solid and hazardous wastes, timely cleanup of hazardous waste sites and spills, and the preservation of wetlands and coastal resources.
