Grafton Bakery Operation Assessed $4,140 Penalty, Will Connect to Municipal Sewer System to Remedy Industrial Wastewater Violations
The Massachusetts Department of Environmental Protection (MassDEP) assessed a $4,140 penalty to Dimitria Delights, Inc. of Grafton for violating Industrial Wastewater Management regulations.
During a March 2008 inspection conducted by MassDEP, the wholesale bakery operating at 81 Creeper Hill Road was found to be discharging bakery-related wastewater to its Title 5 septic system, in violation of Title 5 and Groundwater Discharge regulations.
In a consent order with MassDEP, Dimitria Delights agreed to pay the penalty. The company must also collect and truck off-site all bakery-related wastewater, and construct a piping system from the plant to the Town of Grafton wastewater collection system by July 2010 for the long-term discharge of the wastes.
"The company has a relatively new Title 5 sanitary wastewater disposal system. However, it was discharging industrial wastewater to this system. Not only is the system not designed for industrial wastewater, but by introducing the volume of industrial wastewater there was a risk of rendering the system ineffective for treating the sanitary waste water for which it was designed," said Michael Maher, acting deputy director for MassDEP's Central Regional Office in Worcester.
"The result of this enforcement action is that the illegal discharge is eliminated, and the company will connect into the town's wastewater collection system."
MassDEP is responsible for ensuring clean air and water, safe management and recycling of solid and hazardous wastes, timely cleanup of hazardous waste sites and spills, and the preservation of wetlands and coastal resources.
