Brownfields
Description
Approximately $2.5 million should be available for EPA to distribute to municipalities for the assessment and cleanup of brownfield properties across the Commonwealth. Brownfield sites are typically abandoned urban parcels with known or suspected contamination on site. Massachusetts submitted 40 grant application to EPA for brownfield grant money last spring.
In addition, EPA has issued a request for applications from eligible governmental entities and nonprofit organizations to provide environmental job training projects that will facilitate job creation in the assessment and remediation, of brownfields sites for sustainable reuse. The closing date for receipt of applications is April 20, 2009.
Eligibility Criteria
Funding comes directly from EPA to eligible entities (including municipalities, non-profits, regional planning authorities, and tribal governments). In Massachusetts, $2.7 million in Recovery Act funds and $4.4 million from the EPA brownfield general program funding was awarded.
