American Recovery & Reinvestment Act of 2009 (Recovery Act) Information
Leaking Underground Storage Tanks

MassDEP expects to use approximately $3.2 million in stimulus money to fund the remediation of known storage tanks buried underground that are or have been compromised, leaking petroleum into the environment.

Eligibility Criteria

Underground storage tanks that stored motor fuels and are known or suspected to have leaked are eligible for funding under the LUST program. Tanks used to store heating oil for on site use are not eligible. Also ineligible are septic tanks, above ground storage tanks, tanks used to store hazardous wastes, and natural gas pipelines. Tank owners and operators may be liable for LUST funds used to investigate and remediate eligible sites.

LUST Grant Notice of Funding Availability (NOFA) and Application

This grant provides funding to assist Massachusetts communities with assessment and cleanup of leaking underground storage tanks that contain (or contained) motor fuel. The funding has been made available by the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA) of 2009 through the federal Leaking Underground Storage Tank (LUST) Grant Program.
