The Massachusetts Department of Environmental Protection (MassDEP) has made a number of significant changes to the Municipal Recycling & Diversion Data Sheet for calendar year 2007. These changes are summarized below.
|
CHANGE |
SECTION |
DESCRIPTION |
|
Title Change |
Throughout |
- The title of this report has been changed FROM the Municipal Recycling Data Sheet TO the Municipal Recycling & Diversion Data Sheet.
- No changes have been made to the data collection process or the rate calculation methodology.
- This title change has been made to more accurately describe the kind of information collected, and the type of diversion that is included in MassDEP’s final rate calculation.
- For instance, MassDEP has and will continue to collect data on and to credit municipalities for reuse and source reduction activities that are not included in the definition of recycling.
- MassDEP will also change the name of the rates calculated from “recycling” rates to “recycling and diversion” rates to clarify that these rates include composting, hazardous household product, and some reuse/source reduction activities in addition to recycling.

C&D Waste & Recycling |
Section 2 Section 6 |
- In Section 2 space has been added to record any C&D waste sent for disposal.
- C&D waste should not be included in the landfill or combustion totals in this section and should be subtracted from your total disposal figure, which should include municipal solid waste only.
|
|
Private Hauler Disposal Tonnage |
Section 3 |
- This is not a change from previous years, but a reminder and clarification.
- In Section 3 disposal tonnage from residents who subscribe with private haulers should be recorded if known.
- If you do not report disposal tonnage for the portion of your population served by private haulers MassDEP will estimate this tonnage based on a generic per household calculation.
|
|
Private Hauler Recycling Tonnage NEW |
Section 3 Section 4 |
- In Section 3 space has been added for recycling tonnage from residents who subscribe with private haulers.
- If your municipality does not have exact recycling tonnages for residents who subscribe with private haulers, please complete Section 4.
- Based on the questions from section 4, municipalities may be eligible to receive a generic per household credit for recycling tonnage for the households that subscribe with private haulers. If this tonnage is significant compared to your municipality’s total recycling tonnage, MassDEP may request additional supporting documentation.
|
|
Single Stream Recycling |
Section 6 |
- In Section 6 space has been added for municipalities who have shifted to a single stream collection process to record combined single-stream tonnage. This data will help support program evaluation work with respect to single-stream recycling.
|
|
Mercury Containing Products |
Section 8c |
- Section 8c has been added to collect more detailed data on mercury containing products regulated under the Mercury Management Act.
