Source Water Assessment & Protection Program Update

Assessments

MassDEP staff have completed assessment reports for all public water systems in Massachusetts.

Delineations

MassDEP approved 125 Zone II delineations completed by MassDEP Contractors for approximately 224 public supply wells. The following lists of Zone II delineation projects by region provide information on the town, source, basin, pumping rate, and expected date of completion: Western Region, Central Region, Northeast Region, and Southeast Region. In addition, MassDEP staff upgraded the protection area delineations for 1171 smaller wells.

GIS Datalayers

Refinement of Public Water Supply locations and Public Water Supply Protection Areas is continuing. Map formats for all systems were finalized, and final maps were sent with all final reports. The latest data is available from MassGIS at http://www.mass.gov/mgis/.

An Internet map service showing Public Water Supply Protection Areas has been developed. A link to this map service is available from the Drinking Water Program web site.

Local Boards

MassDEP is working with local officials, local groups, and others to encourage communities to assemble relevant information that MassDEP can use to supplement its own data in developing the SWAPs for medium and large community systems and to work on improving water supply protection. Boards of Health received copies of TNC assessments and are particularly urged to use the information to assist systems in protecting their sources.  The Massachusetts Water Works Association hosted a series of workshops for small water systems and Boards of Health to discuss SWAP reports and how to use them to further protection.

Strategy

The federal Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) approved MassDEP's Source Water Assessment & Protection (SWAP) Program  strategy in September 1999.  The entire strategy is included in these files:SWAP Strategy Report; Appendix A; Appendix B; and Appendix C.
