Licensing and certification are mandated to ensure that individuals handling pesticides have a minimum competence and can apply them without causing harm to themselves or the environment and possess basic knowledge of the pesticide laws of the Commonwealth.
Each classification of pesticide applicator is required to successfully
pass an examination to insure knowledge of the laws and proper use and
handling of pesticides. Certified and licensed applicators must maintain
their certifications by attending recertification programs designed to
update their knowledge of safe and proper use of pesticides.
The Pesticide Education Program of Cooperative Extension has the basic responsibly for training applicators according to Department standards. Training manuals
are prepared by the Cooperative
Extension of the University of Massachusetts and other states.
Pre-Exam training workshops for general pesticide applicator exams are designed to assist individuals
to prepare to take the applicator license (core) exam. Workshops are held
at various locations and scheduled dates throughout the year. Topics covered in the workshops include: pests, pest management, health, safety, environment, as well as laws and
regulations. A Practice Exam is given at the end of the workshop to assess knowledge of pesticide safety, use and regulations.
