228Site ID:EssexTown:1.7Acres:NoRapid Technical Site Assessment:RestrictionFillAgricultureOtherCompleted ProjectLowPriority:Site consists of an old railroad bed of fill material (~1 acre total) traversing the marsh and Essex River south of the Main Street / Route 133 causeway. The railroad bed has been abandoned for many years and no longer has a bridge structure across the river. It does not appear to restrict tidal flow of the river and is ~18 feet wide and 1-3 feet above the marsh grade. Restoration actions would remove the fill material from the marsh surface to restore wetland soils, hydrology, and vegetation. Removal would also enhance tidal sheet flow across the marsh surface. Restoration potential is considered low based on the high cost of fill removal and concerns about potential contaminants in the fill material due to historic railroad use. Restoration of this site may be appropriate as mitigation for off-site wetland impacts.Site Summary:Under DevelopmentImpact Type(s)StatusPotential Project
