401Site ID:IpswichTown:0.3Acres:NoRapid Technical Site Assessment:RestrictionFillAgricultureOtherCompleted ProjectLowPriority:Site is located within the Argilla Road / Castle Hill salt marsh restoration area that is owned by the Trustees of Reservations and is the site of one of the first tidal marsh restoration projects in Massachusetts. The original project replaced the culvert beneath Argilla Road to increase tidal exchange to the upstream marsh to the north. The current opportunity consists of old carriage road fill across the center of the same marsh. The road was constructed through the marsh and across the tidal creek. Approximately 0.3 acres of fill remains on the marsh surface. A low-altitude aerial photo shows old wooden bridge piles remain within the creek channel where a former bridge spanned the channel. The remaining fill does not appear to restrict tidal flow in the creek, but may impede sheet flow across portions of the marsh. A site visit was not conducted. Restoration actions would remove the fill from the marsh surface to restore wetland soils, hydrology, and vegetation. Restoration potential is considered low based on the small area of opportunity and the relatively high per-acre costs to remove fill from the marsh. Potential is elevated because the site is owned by TTOR. Restoration of this site may be appropriate as mitigation for off-site wetland impacts.Site Summary:Under DevelopmentImpact Type(s)StatusPotential Project
