430Site ID:GloucesterTown:1.5Acres:NoRapid Technical Site Assessment:RestrictionFillAgricultureOtherCompleted ProjectLowPriority:Site consists of ~1.5 acres of former salt marsh upstream (east) of what appears to be a private boat yard north of Ferry Street and south of Perrwinkle Lane. This site was not identified in the Gloucester restoration plan produced by Mass Audubon. The 1850s Coastal Survey map shows the delineated area as salt marsh. GIS analysis suggests that this marsh was diked off from tidal flow when the driveway was built across the tidal creek. A site visit was not conducted. Aerial photos clearly show that wetland downstream of the driveway is salt marsh, while the upstream wetland is clearly a fresh water forested red maple wetland. These conditions strongly suggest that the culvert beneath the access drive does not convey any tidal flow to the upstream wetland, which is surrounded by many residential properties that may be low-lying. A site visit is needed to further assess conditions and restoration options. Restoration actions could restore tidal exchange with the upstream marsh. Restoration potential is considered low based on the relatively small opportunity, private ownership, and likely concerns about flooding. However, further investigation is needed to gain a better understanding of the site.Site Summary:Under DevelopmentImpact Type(s)StatusPotential Project
