Outdoorswoman Events

Below is the planned schedule of events for the 2012 Becoming An Outdoorswoman Program. Registration materials will be posted for each workshop when details have been finalized.

Becoming an Outdoors Family Camping Weekends To Be Offered this Summer!

We'll be working with the Department of Conservation and Recreation to offer not 1 but 4 Family Camping Weekends in different parts of the state this summer! Not all details have been finalized but you can save these dates and locations. Registration information will be available by mid-June:

July 20-21-- Otter River State Park, Templeton
July 27-28-- Harold Parker State Forest, Andover
Aug 3-4-- Nickerson State Park, Brewster
Aug 10-11-- Tolland State Park, Tolland

March 23 -- Turkey Hunting Seminar and Guided Hunt, Shirley/Lancaster -- This is a two-part program consisting of a one-day seminar on March 23 in Shirley and a one-day turkey hunt to be offered May 6 in nearby Devens. This program is especially designed for the beginning adult female hunter (18+) -- if you've taken hunter education and want to try hunting, this is a good next step!Photographers and others interested in turkeys will also learn ways to find and view the state's official game bird. Participants may choose to take part in one session or both. For the Seminar, no previous hunting experience is required. Turkey Hunt participants are required to take the Seminar segment if they want to participate in the Hunt. Turkey Hunt participants must also have a valid FID or LTC, shotgun, valid MA 2012 hunting license, and turkey permit. Space is unlimited for the seminar, but only a limited number of people may participate in the Hunt. Registration is handled with a preference to people who are new to this hunt and on a first-come, first-serve basis.

March 30 -- Fly Tying for Outdoorswomen, Belchertown -- Tying an imitation fly and using it to catch a fish is a relaxing and memorable experience, and early spring is a great time to create fishing flies as you contemplate the upcoming fishing season. Jim Lafley of the Federation of Fly Fishers will teach you the skills to get you started in fly-tying with assistance by Jim Lagacy, MassWildlife’s Angler Education Coordinator. This
workshop is designed for adult women (18+ years) who are new to this activity. You will have the opportunity to tie at least two patterns during the class. All materials and equipment will be provided for the class session and the instructor will answer questions about the basic equipment to get you started on your own. Space is limited to 10 participants.



Past Workshops-2012

April 14 /May 7 - Turkey Seminar and Hunt- This is a two-part program consisting of a one-day seminar on April 14 in Shirley and a one-day turkey hunt to be offered May 7 in nearby Devens. April 28 - Shooting Sports Day for Outdoorswomen and Men, Hanson - Ever wanted to learn the basics of firearms, shoot a rifle, shotgun, handgun or bow and arrow? This is a workshop for Beginners, both for men and women! Try your hand at shooting a shotgun, rifle, handgun, and archery equipment with expert instructors! Optional Massachusetts Gun Law Session at the end of the day. Complete the workshop and the optional segment and you will receive a certificate which will be helpful in applying for an F.I.D. or L.T.C card. Registration materials. PDF icon

August 4-5 - Becoming an Outdoors Family Camping Weekend, Templeton-- Registration is closed because the workshop is full! The Becoming an Outdoors Family Camping Weekend is focused on learning a variety of skills for a lifetime of outdoor recreation. Designed primarily for families of all kinds, (bring your grandchild, niece or nephew!) it is a great opportunity if you are a beginning camping family who wants to learn about camping or improve your skills, you would like to try some new family activities or you enjoy the company of like-minded families. The workshop will take place at Otter River State Forest located in northern Worcester County. This workshop is a joint partnership between the Division of Fisheries and Wildlife, the Department of Conservation and Recreation and this year's major sponsor, North Face. No prior outdoor experience is necessary, this weekend is especially designed for families new to camping. We will focus on learning basic camping and recreation skills including outdoor cooking, fishing, archery and nature walks to help you and your family to enjoy the outdoors. Special thanks to REI, Inc. for loaner camping equipment!

November 10/December 8 - Deer Seminar and Hunt for Outdoorswomen, Shirley and Devens -- This is a 2-part workshop for adult women, consisting of a 1-day seminar and a 1-day deer hunt in December. Participants may choose to take part in one session or both. No previous hunting experience is required, but Hunt participants must have shotgun, ammunition and a valid 2012 Massachusetts hunting license. First-time participants are required to take the seminar segment if they want to participate in the Deer Hunt. The Deer Hunting Seminar segment will provide information on deer ecology, behavior, and deer management in Massachusetts. There will be an overview of deer hunting strategies and an opportunity to check your hunting gear and to sight in (target shoot) your shotgun with expert assistance.
