State Fish Hatcheries
MassWildlife
currently manages four fish hatchery facilities, open to the public,located
in Sandwich, Belchertown, Montague and Sunderland.
Rainbow, brown, brook and tiger trout are raised for stocking rivers, streams, lakes and ponds throughout the Commonwealth.

DIRECTIONS TO SANDWICH HATCHERY
From Rte 25/Rte 495/Rte I-195 -- Go over the Bourne Bridge to the rotary. Go ¾ around the rotary to Rt 6A east towards Sandwich. 6 Stay on Rte 6A (about 6 miles) and go straight through the traffic light at the exit for Rte 6. (Do not get on to Rte 6.) Continue on Rte 6A through 3 more traffic lights (at Merchants Square, Tupper Road, and Jarvis Street). The Sandwich Hatchery entrance is ½ mile from the Jarvis Street traffic light on the right, directly across from Dewey Avenue and a mini-golf course.
From Rte 3 and points North -- Take Rte 3 to the Sagamore Bridge, staying in the right lane on Rte 6. Take the first exit (Exit 1/Sandwich). At the bottom of the ramp, take a right on to Rte 6A, go through three traffic lights (at Merchants Square, Tupper Road, and Jarvis Street). The Sandwich Hatchery entrance is ½ mile from the Jarvis Street traffic light on the right, directly across from Dewey Avenue and a mini-golf course.
From the East on Rte 6 -- Take Rte 6 west to Exit 3. Go right
onto Quaker Meeting House Road and follow to Rte 6A (0.8 mi). Go left
(west) on Rte 6A for 1.4 miles. Hatchery entrance is on the left across
from Dewey Avenue and a small park.
DIRECTIONS TO BITZER HATCHERY, MONTAGUE
From the MassPike and Rte I - 91--From the Pike, take Exit 4 to I-91 North. Take exit 24, (signed Rte 5 & 10/Deerfield) onto Rtes 5 & 10 north, bear right at the end of the ramp. At the traffic lights, take a right onto Rte 116 south towards Sunderland. (signed Sunderland, Amherst) Continue on 116 south, over the Connecticut River, and turn left at the lights in Sunderland center onto Rte 47 north (signed Montague, Millers Falls). Follow Rte. 47 north approximately 4.7 miles where it will end. Bear left on Main Street (unmarked) towards Montague Center. When entering Montague Center village, at the common bear left toward Turners Falls. (The road becomes Turners Fall Road.) Drive 2 miles. Hatchery Road is on the left, note brown Bitzer hatchery sign. Turn left and follow to the hatchery.
From Route 2 (East or Westbound on Rte 2) -- At the traffic
lights in Gill (by Turners Falls Bridge and gas station across the corner)
turn and cross the bridge over the river towards Turners Falls. After
crossing the bridge, continue straight (This is Avenue A). At the first
traffic light, turn left onto 3rd Street and continue up the hill, bearing
right which becomes Turners Falls Road. Go straight through the stop
sign by the fire station. Hatchery Road will be 1.7 miles beyond the
fire station on the right. Turn right on to Hatchery Road and follow
to the hatchery.
